About The MAC

This clinic provides private medical treatment for appropriate conditions using acupuncture. Based in a medical centre, each treatment is carried out by a practicing GP with special training in acupuncture since 1995

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is known to have been used in China at least 2000 years ago.
It involves the use of very thin, sterile, disposable needles through the skin to obtain pain relief. Sometimes the needles are inserted at points distant from
the problem area. The needle insertion is generally reported to be painless by patients. Once placed, the needles are usually left in position for 10 - 30 minutes and gently stimulated, sometimes using a tiny electric current.

What conditions can be treated using acupuncture?

At our clinic the most commonly treatment conditions are back pain and neck pain, whiplash injuries, muscle sprains, headache, migraine and period pain. The medical literature suggesting benefit from acupuncture in these conditions
is extensive.

Other conditions seem to respond well also, e.g. osteoarthritis, repetitive strain injury, nausea and morning sickness.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first appointment is usually the longest (approx 1hr) as at this stage, a full medical history and examination is taken by the doctor. This is done so that a diagnosis and treatment plan can be devised but also so that patients who are not suitable for acupuncture treatment can be advised of this at the earliest possible stage. People who have immune system disorders (at risk of severe infection), bleeding disorders, heart problems and pacemakers require special care when it comes to inserting needles, and we need to know of this.

We apply the rules of medical confidentiality.

Your treatment begins at your first appointment.

Are there any side effects?

Potentially, yes.

Acupuncture is not an inert therapy, so there may be side effects. These are uncommon and usually minor e.g. minimal bruising, slight bleeding and a mild worsening of your symptoms the day after treatment. Commonly people feel relaxed and sleepy during and after treatment. For this reason, we prefer that you not drive yourself home after treatment.

Which conditions are not suitable for acupuncture treatment?

We do not treat asthma, depression or skin problems using acupuncture.
There is no scientific evidence to support its use in these conditions.

We consider it vital to correspond with your GP and a letter will be sent during your treatment. Please discuss with the Clinic if you do not want this to go ahead.
